Sheringham Carnival - Old Photos
People have been enjoying Sheringham Carnival for many, many years.  At one time it was one of the biggest events in this area and some of the floats which were entered were very big, detailed and colourful.   Events included the Carnival Day Parade, Five-a-side football competitions, Pram races, Raft races and much much more.

In recent years the Carnival has been going through a revival.   Thanks to the very hard work of the dedicated few, we now have our wonderful Carnival back on track and it is enjoyed by young and old.

Lesley Crowther crowned the Carnival Queen that year, do you know who she was?  Who were her attendants?

The photo on the right was for the lantern restaurant and we believe that it was in 1973.

Who are the Egyptian ladies, complete with Pyramid - do you know them?  Where are they now?

carnival4.jpg (3543 bytes) To the left a family entry as the Black & White Minstrels (before PC), we borrowed the Coalman's lorry, raided the jumble sales and had a great time.

 

To the right a colour photo of the Lantern Restaurant's entry owned at the time by the Swann family.

carnival6.jpg (4074 bytes) The photo on the left is another family entry into the parade, it was Top of the Flops and to show our age we had 'Long John Baldie', as our driver.  George the Coalman actually but he was bald and wearing long johns!

The photo on the right was taken more recently, we do not know when - are you on the float?  Let us know

carnival8.jpg (2568 bytes) These photographs are of the Sheringham Raft race, the beaches would get really crowded and people would cheer on their favourites.  Many of the rafts would sink before they had got very far at all, but some would soldier on and limp home as winners.

There was always a lot of rivalry, mostly between the pub teams!  The battle was grand and the laughs many.   Always an enjoyable time, even on the few occasions when the weather was not kind to us.
